My edible garden look

Gardening is one of the recent interests. The West coast weather made favorable to grow few vegetables and flowers either in soil or pot. I keep my annuals in pots to make easier my fall cleaning.

My container chili plant

I visited the nursery to buy few seeds of vegetable. I started indoor in winter and planted them later in February outside. Now, time came to harvested some juicy tomatoes and some chilis …Okra are still looking too young to be pluck! Few herbs are thriving in pots! My strawberry seems not growing too fast :(
But gardening brings me some relief and I enjoyed spending my time in my backyard :)
Guess you have a fair idea now, how my little vegetable is born!

Tomato plant

Tomatoes are the first vegetable that we enjoyed this season. Made few salad, soup, rasam and ended with tomato chutney!

My first crop in variety of sizes

Thakkali chutney/ Tomato chutney is my mom’s recipe. Little tangy and the spice is balanced with coconut is great hit in my family. Mom usually serves with idli or dosa for breakfast.

Ingredients:
Tomato: 3 medium /chopped
Onion: ½ sliced
Red chili: 3 or less or more
Coconut: ¼ cup
Oil: ½ tsp
Salt: per ur taste or 1/2 tsp

Seasoning:
Oil: ½ tsp
Hing:a pinch
Mustard seeds: ¼ tsp
Curry leaves: few

Method:
Heat oil in a pan; fry the onion first for few seconds until they turn translucent next add the tomato & chili and let cook until they become soft and juicy.
Let it cool completely.
Add the coconut and grind it with little water.
Heat oil and do the seasoning starting with hing. When the mustard seeds starts to split, switch off the stove and add the curry leaves. Pour into the chutney and mix well.

This tomato chutney can be served for idli/dosa or even rotis! Dosa batter is usually an item that I keep in fridge.
Tomato chutney and dosa

I am sending my Tomato chutney accompanied by dosa to Sia who is hosting WBB –summer feast, an event started by Nandita.

Next, My homegrown tomato will go to GYO started by Andrea, and this month Jai & Bee are hosting this event.

Cham! Gardening is such a relaxing experience but due to space constraints I stopped growing potted plants for sometime. Now at my daughter insistence started growing wheat grass, and am planning to grow chillies too!

Thakkali chutney tastes yummy with dosa, idli and rice! Lovely colour too:)

Hey! I just started an event and the thakkali chutney is perfect. Do send it in, dear:)
